Production of the M917 commenced in 1978. When newer M917A1 version was introduced the original M917 was referred as M917A0. It supplemented the US Army's heavy dump trucks. In some selected units it completely replaced smaller dump trucks. The M917 has 8x6 configuration. The suspension setup was carried over from the M916 tractor truck. However an additional pusher type axle was added.
